Why Your Dash Cam Overheats in Summer (and Fixes)

A parked car in summer becomes an oven, and dash cams can shut down or degrade in the heat. A few measures keep yours running through the season.

Why heat is the enemy

Cameras generate their own heat while recording, and a sun-baked windshield adds to it. Excessive heat can trigger a protective shutdown or shorten the camera’s life.

Reduce the load

Park in shade where possible, use a windshield sunshade, and consider a camera with a supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery, as supercapacitors tolerate heat far better.

Manage parking mode

In extreme heat, a time-limited or motion-triggered parking mode reduces how long the camera runs while the car bakes.
