Do You Need a 4K Dash Cam? Resolution Explained

Resolution is the spec most likely to matter after an incident, and also the one marketing leans on hardest. Here is what the numbers actually buy you.

Why detail matters

The whole point of footage is often a license plate several car-lengths away. Higher resolution keeps that plate legible where lower resolution turns it into an unreadable smear.

The trade-offs

4K files are larger, so you fill an SD card faster and need a card fast enough to write the stream without dropping frames. It also costs more than 1080p or 2K.

A sensible rule

If you can afford it, 4K on the front channel is the safest choice. For a rear camera, 1080p is usually adequate since it covers a nearer, narrower scene.
