Connecting a Dash Cam to Your Car Battery Safely

Tapping into your car’s electrical system is safe when done correctly, but a few precautions prevent blown fuses, drained batteries, and worse.

Use a fuse tap, not a splice

A proper fuse tap draws power cleanly from an existing circuit and keeps the fuse protection intact. Splicing into wires directly risks shorts and bypasses that protection.

Ground to bare metal

A solid ground connection to clean bare metal prevents flicker and electrical noise. Scrape away paint or use an existing grounding bolt.

Insist on a cutoff

A low-voltage cutoff, built into good hardwire kits, stops the camera before it drains the battery too far to start the car. Never rely on remembering to unplug.
